Peat briquettes are pressed bars of dried milled peat measuring about 15×5×5 cm and weighing 0.3-0.5 kg. They are the cheapest solid fuel on the market per tonne and at the same time one of the most convenient for a stove: peat briquettes light from paper without kindling, burn almost without a flame and smoulder for a long time, keeping the heat for 8-10 hours after a single load. That is exactly why people buy them for stoves, tiled stoves, potbelly stoves and simple boilers in homes without gas.

Calorific value and ash. A kilogram of peat briquettes gives about 3.5-4.5 kWh of heat, less than wood briquettes (4.5-5) and coal (6.5-8), but a tonne costs noticeably less, so in cost per kilowatt-hour peat often comes out ahead. Ash content is 8-15%: more ash than from wood, but it can be used as a fertiliser. The standard moisture content is up to 16-18%. Smoke and smell during burning are faint, sulphur content is low, and peat does not clinker in a boiler.

Which boiler. Any manually loaded solid fuel boiler or stove with a grate. Peat briquettes perform best in smouldering mode: load in the evening and stay warm until morning. For quickly heating a cold house they are worse than firewood or DG coal, so peat is often combined with other fuels: light the fire with firewood and load peat briquettes for the night. Not suitable for pellet or auger-fed boilers.

Packaging. A 25 kg bag is the retail format for the home, 40 bags per tonne; a big bag of about 1000 kg is for a warehouse with a forklift; bulk loaded into a truck is for boiler houses and for purchases of several tonnes or more, with the lowest price per tonne. Peat briquettes are more sensitive to water than wood briquettes: store them under a canopy, in bags, on a pallet.

Price and delivery. Prices per bag and per tonne are in the table below; bulk is cheaper. Delivery across Ukraine from our warehouse with our own transport, to other regions by carrier. Boiler houses, businesses and dealers get a contract, bank transfer payment with VAT and a quality certificate for each batch.

Bag → price per tonne

Sellers quote per bag, per pack or per tonne, but offers should only be compared per tonne. Enter the price and weight and we will work out the price per tonne and how many bags make a tonne. It also works the other way: enter a price per tonne to get the bag price.

Per tonne: 40,0 bags of 25 kg.

Formula: price per tonne = bag price ÷ bag weight × 1000.

Questions and answers

How much does a tonne of peat briquettes cost, and why is it cheaper than firewood and coal?

The current price per bag and per tonne is in the table on this page; bulk is cheaper. It is cheaper because the raw material is milled peat from Ukrainian deposits in the Volyn and Rivne regions, and production is simple: drying and pressing without glue. Per kilowatt-hour of heat, peat briquettes are usually better value than firewood and comparable to long-flame coal.

Peat briquettes or coal: which is better for a stove?

For a stove, tiled stove or potbelly stove: peat briquettes. They light from paper, need no strong draught, smoulder for a long time and, unlike anthracite, do not produce carbon monoxide at low draught. Coal gives more heat per kilogram and suits a boiler with good draught. They are often combined: peat for the night, coal during the day.

Do peat briquettes give off a smell and smoke?

There is a faint, characteristic peat smell when lighting, but the smoke is light and there is less of it than from green firewood. If the smoke is thick and smells sharp, the peat is damp or there is too little air. With proper draught there is no smell indoors.

How many peat briquettes do I need for the winter?

An insulated house of 100-150 m² needs 6-8 tonnes per season, i.e. 240-320 bags of 25 kg; without insulation, up to 10 tonnes. That is more than coal or wood briquettes, but in money terms the season usually works out cheaper. Call us and we will calculate it for your floor area and boiler.

How should peat briquettes be stored, and how long do they keep?

Dry and under cover: peat is hygroscopic, and wet briquettes go soggy and fall apart. In bags on a pallet under a canopy they keep for two or three seasons. Big bags must be kept under a roof. Bulk goes in a dry shed or bunker, not on the ground.

Is it true that peat smells like "burnt feathers" and the ash is as hard as cement?

Partly. The smell comes from sulphur compounds and moisture in the peat: with a dry briquette and good draught it is barely noticeable and stays by the chimney rather than in the room; a sharp smell comes from damp peat or a closed-down draught. The ash can indeed fuse into a hard crust if peat briquettes are burned in active mode with the ash door vent open: they are designed for smouldering. Ash is 8-15%, i.e. 2-4 kg per bag, and it can be used as a fertiliser. Peat is not for everyone: order a trial bag and burn it for one night before buying a tonne.

Peat briquettes or wood briquettes: which is cheaper per unit of heat?

A kilogram of peat briquettes gives 3.5-4.5 kWh, wood briquettes 4.5-5, so you need 15-25% more peat. If a tonne of peat is more than a quarter cheaper, peat is better value per unit of heat, and in practice it almost always is. The price of the savings is more ash, more storage space and slower heating. Plug the prices from the tables into the article "Calorific value of different fuels" and compare for yourself.

A 25 kg bag: how much is that per tonne?

There are 40 bags of 25 kg in a tonne: bag price × 40 = price per tonne in bags. A bag at 150 UAH works out at 6,000 UAH per tonne. In bulk, a tonne is cheaper by the cost of packaging, but you need a dry storage area. The "Bag → price per tonne" converter on this page will recalculate any offer.

Can I order a bag of peat briquettes as a trial?

Yes. We send a 25 kg trial bag by Nova Poshta to any city, cash on delivery. Load it into your stove for the night, and by morning you will know whether it is right for you, before buying a tonne.

Do I need to pay in advance, and how can I check the weight?

We do not take prepayment: you pay the driver on delivery or cash on delivery via Nova Poshta, and businesses pay by bank transfer with VAT under a contract. Weigh the bags in front of the driver: a check weighing is part of our delivery terms. Bulk and big bags are weighed at dispatch, with the actual weight stated on the delivery note. If the weight is short, we will make up the difference or refund it.

How to burn peat briquettes

  1. Lighting. Paper and a few pieces of kindling on the grate, with 5-6 briquettes on top, leaving gaps. Peat briquettes catch in 5-10 minutes without firewood. A cold house heats up faster with a load of firewood, with the peat added onto the embers.
  2. Loading. A layer of 15-20 cm, no more than two thirds of the firebox. Lay the briquettes flat, with small gaps.
  3. Draught. Once burning well, close the ash door vent almost completely: peat works best when smouldering. Do not close the damper fully while there are still flames on the fuel bed.
  4. Ash. 2-4 kg from a 25 kg bag. Clear it out daily, otherwise the ash layer will block the air from below. Peat ash is a fertiliser for acidic soils.
  5. Safety. As with any smouldering fuel, fit a CO detector in the boiler room. Do not leave bags next to the firebox: peat can ignite from the heat.
  6. What you can see without a lab. A good briquette is dark brown and dense, does not break between your fingers, and there are few crumbs in the bag. Light-coloured, light and flaky means damp or made from poor peat.
