Pini-Kay briquettes (also Pini&Kay) are four- or eight-sided logs 20-30 cm long with a hole running through the middle. They are pressed on a screw extruder at high pressure and temperature, so the surface of the briquette is scorched and dark brown, and the density is the highest of all wood briquettes: 1.0-1.2 g/cm³. The hole works like a chimney inside the briquette: better draught, even burning, and the briquette keeps its shape to the very end.
How they burn. Calorific value about 4.8-5.2 kWh per kilogram, moisture up to 8%, ash content up to 1%. Pini-Kay burn longer than RUF and Nestro (3-4 hours actively, up to 8-10 hours smouldering) and give steady heat without sparks. The scorched crust protects against moisture, so they cope better with a damp room. The downside: the price per tonne is higher than for RUF, and they are slower to catch.
What they are best for. Fireplaces, tiled stoves, stoves with a visible fire and sauna stoves: wherever long burn time and a beautiful, even fire matter. Pini-Kay also work well in a boiler, but in terms of price per kilowatt-hour of heat, RUF mixed wood briquettes are usually better value.
Packaging. A 10 kg pack in shrink film holds 10-12 logs; a pallet is 96 packs, about 960 kg. The wood is usually mixed (with some softwood), which is not critical for Pini-Kay thanks to their density.
