Anthracite is the coal with the highest degree of coalification: over 90% carbon and only 2-8% volatile matter. That is why it burns without smoke, almost without flame and without soot, and gives the most heat per kilogram of any solid fuel: about 7,000-8,000 kcal/kg, roughly 8 kWh. One boiler load keeps an even heat for 8-12 hours, and it leaves less ash than bituminous coal or firewood.
The catch: lighting and draught. Anthracite is hard to ignite: it is lit on a bed of firewood or long-flame coal and loaded in a layer of 15-20 cm. It only burns evenly with good draught, so it works best in boilers with a forced-draught fan or a tall chimney. Anthracite is not suitable for stoves and fireplaces.
Grades by lump size. AO (АО, nut, 25-50 mm) is the all-round fraction for manual loading into boilers with a large firebox. AM (АМ, small, 13-25 mm) is for manual loading into boilers with a small firebox and for automatic boilers with moving grates. AS (АС, pea, 6-13 mm) is for automatic boilers with auger or retort feed. Chemically all grades are the same; the only difference is how the fuel gets into the firebox.
Quality standard. Graded anthracite to DSTU 3472 has an ash content of up to 10-15% and moisture of up to 8%; the fines content in graded coal is up to 10%. We provide the batch test report with these figures on request, together with the delivery note.
Packaging. 25 kg bag: for a house, 40 bags per tonne, easy to carry and measure out. Big bag of about 1000 kg: for a warehouse with a forklift. Bulk: by truck, unloaded onto a yard or into a boiler house bunker, at the lowest price per tonne.
Price and delivery. Prices per bag and per tonne for each grade are in the table below; the price per tonne goes down with volume. Delivery across Ukraine from our warehouse with our own vehicles, and to other regions by carrier. Boiler houses and dealers get a contract, bank transfer payment with VAT and a shipping schedule for the season.
How to check anthracite on delivery
The bag. Intact, labelled with the grade and fraction; no more than a handful of fines at the bottom. If a quarter of the bag is small pieces, the fraction does not match the grade.
The lump. Black, with a metallic sheen, uniform, without grey or brown layers. Grey or rusty lumps are rock: it does not burn and stays in the ash. Graded anthracite should contain no more than a few percent of rock.
Weight and sound. Anthracite is heavier than bituminous coal of the same fraction and rings when struck rather than giving a dull knock. It does not break or crumble between your fingers.
Your hand. Anthracite hardly soils your palm. If a lump leaves a black mark, it is bituminous coal or anthracite mixed with something else.
Documents. Ask for a numbered test report for the batch: ash content, moisture, volatile matter, calorific value. We provide it together with the delivery note. These checks do not replace a laboratory, but they weed out most problem batches while the truck is still being unloaded.
